Product reviews are fast becoming, take that back, have become, the most valuable source of buyer information on the web. Follow these tips and your online shopping experience will be so successful you will actually look forward to researching your next purchase.
It’s probably safe to say that every consumer product currently available for sale, can be found on the web. What a great world we live in! It is significantly easier today to always buy the best product in it’s category then it was not too long ago. In many cases, these ‘best’ products were not even available to most people who didn’t live near a large metro area and the large and specialty retailers. Now, all products are available to all people through the web, and at very competitive prices.
So how do we find these ‘best’ products? It’s a one word answer...’Reviews’. Reviews of products on the web have become a very popular source of buyer information. Reviews by expert testing web site's and reviews by previous buyers offering real world experiences provides a wealth of information about a planned purchase. The key to successfully using reviews to find the best products in a category is knowing the credibility of the reviewer...how accurate is the review?
General Review Websites
These can be broken down into 2 categories: General review sites that review a wide variety of products and specialty review sites that review specific product categories like cameras. There are 3 general review sites that you can count on providing accurate and unbiased reviews.
1.) TopTenReviews.com - This site reviews a large number of products and services, in depth, with the pros and cons. It’s a great place to start your search for the best products.
2.) Consumersearch.com - This site provides a summary of all other expert reviews on a particular product. Another great site to narrow your search for the best.
3.) ConsumerReports.org - This is a well know, highly regarded, consumer review magazine website. Lots of good information here on a large variety of products that are professionally tested and reviewed.
Expert Websites
For whatever product you are shopping for, type in Google, the ‘product type’ followed by ‘reviews’. From these search results select the sites that review just that product type, i.e. cameras.
The ones closest to the top of the list are likely the most reputable, but a visit to the sites will tell you in pretty short order which ones can be relied on. The more detailed the reviews and the more testing that has been done, the more valuable their shopping recommendations.

Amazon User Reviews
Amazon user reviews are great for real world confirmation that the product you are narrowing in on is actually as good as your current research has indicated. You do have to be very careful when putting any stock into the validity of these reviews. First, the more reviews a product has the better. Second, avoid putting any weight on outliers, those reviews that are significantly different from the rest. Look for recurring positive and negative themes. Recurring negative comments might be something you want to seriously consider before making a purchase. The trick here is to not put too much weight on any one review, but take all the reviews as a whole.
After going thru this process, you will have narrowed your choice to probably just one or two ‘best’ products. For further shopping research, put in the specific ‘product name and model number’ into Google, followed by ‘reviews’. The search results should help you to narrow your selection to a purchase decision that you will be very happy with.
